Iceland Adventure {9.11.16 - 9.17.16} Day Six and Seven

Our last full day in Iceland has arrived! What? How did that go by so quickly?? It was also our last night of camping in the cold weather, which I was fine to leave behind. Somehow we managed to see everything we wanted during this last day.

Hallgrimskirkja Church in Rekjavik: This church was designed to match the geology of the columnar basalt's that you can find in numerous places around the island - the pillars you see are six-sided. The statue in front of the church was a gift from the United States to Iceland. The statue depicts the man Leif Erikson because he was the first known European explorer to discover North America in 930 A.D., over 500 years before Christopher Columbus.

More than 5,000 pipes in this Organ
Reykjadalur (Hengill area) Geothermal area: This area is very popular because if you hike about 3 miles you find a place that allows you to soak away all your worries in a hot spring river. I wish we could have had the opportunity to soak in the hot springs, but we decided not to because I was 10 weeks pregnant at the time.

Raufarholshellir – 2nd largest lava tube cave in Iceland

Seltun geothermal field – hot spring and boiling mud pots. Notice the drilling rig in the distance, drilling for geothermal energy!

The blue Lagoon: A beautiful lagoon with minerals that make this water a beautiful turquoise shade of blue. Once again, we couldn't get in because I was pregnant at the time.

Valahnukur- coastline with very, very strong winds

I was nervous to take this picture haha

Bridge between Two Continents – Plate tectonic ridge between North American and Eurasian Plates

Caught this beautiful rainbow just in time over the mid-Atlantic ridge!

We finally made it to our Airbnb for the night and made some great new friends! This family was so welcoming and helpful. We took a picture of their front door because it showed how Icelanders keep track of their family names. Every person's last name is based on whether or not they are a son or daughter and then they take the father's first name. For example, Colby's last name would be Son of Don (Donson) and my last name would be Daughter of Franklin (Franklinsdaughter) (my last name would not change once I married, it would always  stay the same). This is a nightmare for family history!
On day seven we slept in for the first time of the entire trip! It was very much needed! Then we packed up, dropped off our rental car and left Iceland around 4pm. It was a wonderful trip and I look forward to a layover on our way to Europe someday, so I can soak in the hot springs of the blue lagoon (it's only 20 minutes from the airport, oh yeah!).
