Iceland Adventure {9.11.16 - 9.17.16} Day Three

Day three in Iceland was spent in the land of Ice. We went to Vatnajokull National Park, which has ice caves, glaciers, glacial tongues, and waterfalls.

Did you know that Vatnajokull is the largest ice cap in Europe by volume and the second largest by area!? This was one of my favorite days. The glacier ice is so blue and clear. I loved it!
Svartifoss Waterfall surrounded by black columnar basalt.

Svinafellsjokull glacial tongue: Not as pretty as some of the other glacial tongues we encountered because of  the muddy water, but that is expected since it is an actual moving glacier bringing sediment with it along its path.

Picturesque

Kviarjokull glacial tongue: This glacial tongue was HUGE! This is a zoomed in picture and even from this you can tell that it is gigantic. I wish we had time to hike to it.

Fjallsarlon glacial tongue and lake. Did I mention it was cold....

Jokulsarlon glacial tongue and lake – Glacier Lagoon. This lagoon had very still and blue water because it was far from the actual glacial tongue, and it is connected to the ocean. We even saw a seal swimming around the icebergs.

After our adventures for the day at the ice cap we continued our drive along the ring road and found a campground with nice hot showers. Iceland is really neat in that they do not use any form of electricity to heat their water. They drill hot water wells and cold water wells. Their hot water comes directly from the ground already heated because of the geothermal activity.
