Iceland Adventure {9.11.16 - 9.17.16} Day Five

Our Iceland adventure just flew on by. Day five felt like the longest day of the entire week. After we left our camp we stopped at a few places, but drove a very long ways to get to the west side of the island.

Colby showing his inner Shepherd self:

Grjotagja Fissure – This hot spring area used to be a very popular swimming area for several decades. However, in the 1970's there was volcanic activity nearby which caused a sharp rise in the water temperature.
Hverfell – Black Crater: Colby loved this place.

Dimmuborgir “Dark Castle” - This place is very unique. 2000 years ago there was a volcanic eruption. The magma filled over a swampy area and created a lava lake. The magma then heated the water from the marshland, which caused steam to burst to the surface creating steam vents while the lava solidified around it. Eventually, the lava spilled out from its lake leaving behind lava columns from the stream vents.

Can you find Colby?
Godafoss waterfall: "Waterfall of the Gods." This was waterfall was stunning. Legend is that in the year 1000, "lawspeaker Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði" declared Iceland a Christian nation. After doing so, he threw all of his pagan statues into this waterfall.

Akureyri: Largest city in northern Iceland, also known as Iceland's "second capital". We visited their cute Christmas store (bought nothing because it cost an arm and a leg), and visited a beautiful church.
