Iceland Adventure {9.11.16 - 9.17.16} Day Four

Already day four! Our trip is more than halfway over! Sad, but still lots to see and experience. Once we left our second campground we drove to a lovely small town tucked away in an east coast fjord. It was charming and beautiful. We even stopped at a small bakery and bought a fresh loaf of bread and pastry, which both were to die for. I think our bread lasted barely two days. We ate it like candy.

Seydisfjordur: quaint fishing town

This ferry ship leaves the U.K every so often and travels here.

twas delish!!!

Dettifoss Waterfall: Considered to be the most powerful waterfall in all of Europe. Did you know that part of the movies "Oblivion" and "Prometheus" were filmed in Iceland? This waterfall was in these movies.

Leirhnjukur Lava Field: This place is where the disgusting sulfur smells begin for the rest of our trip. This particular area of northern Iceland reminded us of Yellowstone National Park.

I really liked that Iceland didn't have a lot of restrictions about their national parks like the United States does. More room for exploring, but just don't get too close!
The trail through this area was right next to the rising steam. It was very fascinating.

Lava flows everywhere! Most of the flows here are from 9 eruptions from 1975-1984, known as the "Krafla Fires"

One of many geothermal power plants

Hverir geothermal field: Another place that smells like rotten eggs and you do not want to get too close!
Fumarole: a steam vent

Sulfuric acid mud pots: sulfuric acid dissolves everything around it and breaks everything down into clay or mud.
Reykjahlio Church: This church is famous in Iceland because in 1792 there was an eruption of a nearby volcano. The lava flow destroyed the town, but stopped right at the church  "as a result of the prayers of the village priest." However, the old church building was replaced with this new one in the 1900's.

The lava flow that nearly destroyed the church and it's ground. If you look closely you can see the ancient lave flow just beyond the original church wall.
We made it to our third campground for the night at Lake Myvatn. This lake is one of the best places to see the Northern lights, but we missed it by one week.....oh bother.
