The first time we started our blog I despised the idea! I did not
want a blog, mostly because I did not want to be the one writing it. Colby
promised that he would write the blog and I could add pictures. That was the
deal. However, as time went on we both got busy and we didn't write a blog post
for a long time. As life continued we would have amazing adventures and
milestones with lots and lots of pictures. One day I got thinking, "Why
have all these pictures and then only look back at them once in a while to
remind me of some of the good times we had." I wanted to start blogging
again, so I could write a little about each adventure and put pictures to our
story. So that's what I did and what I am doing now. I want to print each year
out so I have all of stories and pictures in one place, kind of like a family
history. I write our history as it is happening. It will make things much
easier, so that when I am old and falling apart (hopefully I live for a long
time to see my family grow) I don't have a panic attack and wonder why I never
wrote any of my family history down and then try to throw one together really
quick. Yeah, not cool! I don't want to do that.
Now for the fun stuff! I realize that
mainly my posts have pictures with a brief paragraph about what we did, but now
I want to try adding more of the story with each post. Hopefully this works
out. I realize my writing is BORING and I try to be the same person on this blog as I am in
person, but most of the time that doesn't work for me. This is taking a big
leap (too bad I didn't write this yesterday...yesterday was February 29th, leap
day! hahaha). Unless I am boring in person...but that doesn't seem to be the
case because I have a lot fun and I don't like to be bored so I think I'm
good.
So blah, blah, blah let’s get to Hazard
time! This past weekend we spent our time doing things we love…playing
outdoors! We camped at Lake Mineral Wells State Park and went rock climbing at
penitentiary hollow (within the state park. oh and lovely name, right?) with
our new rope that we bought on black Friday. The weather was perfect for
camping because although it is February, we do live in Texas. However,
everything looked dead because of the winter season, but I saw a few hidden
blossoms and green leaves hinting that spring is just around the corner!

The birds were very loud and everywhere. I think they thought it was already spring! |

Enjoying the hammock while Colby went fishin' on the lake. He caught nothing sadly. But inside I was happy because I was not going to have fish for dinner. |
|
While fishing a vulture was being creepy and kept looking at us like it wanted to eat us (not unusual for a vulture, but this one was even more eerie) and we finally discovered why. We found her nest under the rocks that we had the hammock over. Vulture eggs!! |
|
I would be clueless with how to set everything up for rock climbing. Good thing Colby is an Eagle Boy Scout! |
|
I love that Colby and I practically have the same size feet! It's best for things like rock climbing! Now we only need one pair of shoes :) |
|
Maybe this is why they call it Penitentiary Hollow...

"Just hang there while I get this picture okay...oh and don't fall" |

The next day we packed up and drove to Fort Richardson State Park.We walked around the old fort and buildings and learned a bit of the history, mostly the medical history of how they treated their patients. We bumped into a tour guide telling gruesome stories to an eight and ten year old who looked absolutely petrified. Heck, I was petrified. Colby thought it was hilarious. So glad I didn't live during that time! Let's just say ouch and gross! I'll spare you the story of a dead body falling down the stairs and then since he was so swollen from being in the heat and dead 2 days that he basically exploded when he hit the ground. Oh, and then the doctor had a nurse clean it up with some type of acid and it burned her hands and feet. After that they built a separate building behind the hospital as the morgue, so it didn't happen again. Sorry I couldn't help myself. Just imagine an eight year old hearing the story! ha she was horrified.

Medical dictionary dating back to 1860! |

They left it out on the desk. And of course, since it was not in a case we touched it and looked through it. Who would't? It was cool. |

So glad I don't have to cook or bake in a kitchen like this |

After looking around we went on a 12 mile bike ride around the twin lakes! It was great. Surprisingly there were a lot of little, but steep hills. I totally beat Colby on most of them. Sorry Colby, but I needed to put that bit of info in here, you know...for family history ;) (However, he always passed me going downhill ;))
